Why is it performed?
Biopsies are done to check for conditions like skin cancer, infections, or other skin problems. It gives the provider important information to make the right diagnosis and plan treatment.
What the procedure entails?
- Shave biopsy: removes a thin layer of skin.
- Punch biopsy: removes a small, round piece of skin.
- Excisional biopsy: removes a larger area of skin or tissue.
What the provider will look at before performing a biopsy?
The sample is sent to a certified laboratory where a pathologist looks at it under a microscope.
Types of biopsies performed
Most biopsy results are ready within 3–7 business days. Your provider will review the results with you.
Where the specimen sent?
If the biopsy shows certain types of skin cancer, you may be referred to a Mohs surgeon for precise removal and treatment.
How long it takes to get results
Most people heal within a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the type and size of the biopsy.
